Gravitation and Motion of Earth in Vedas

GRAVITATIONAL FORCE

Rig Veda 8.12.28

“O Indra! by putting forth your mighty rays, which possess the qualities of gravitation and attraction-illumination and motion – keep up the entire universe in order through the Power of your attraction.”

Rig Veda 1.6.5, Rig Veda 8.12.30

“O God, You have created this Sun. You possess infinite power. You are upholding the sun and other spheres and render them steadfast by your power of attraction.

Yajur Veda 33.43

“The sun moves in its own orbit in space taking along with itself the mortal bodies like earth through force of attraction.”

Rig Veda 1.35.9

“The sun moves in its own orbit but holding earth and other heavenly bodies in a manner that they do not collide with each other through force of attraction.

Rig Veda 1.164.13

“Sun moves in its orbit which itself is moving. Earth and other bodies move around sun due to force of attraction, because sun is heavier than them.

Atharva Veda 4.11.1

“The sun has held the earth and other planets”

ECLIPSE

Rig Veda 5.40.5
“O Sun! When you are blocked by the one whom you gifted your own light (moon), then earth gets scared by sudden darkness.”

Rig Veda 10.149.1
“The sun has tied Earth and other planets through attraction and moves them around itself as if a trainer moves newly trained horses around itself holding their reins.”

In this mantra,
Savita = Sun
Yantraih = through reins
Prithiveem = Earth
Aramnaat = Ties
Dyaam Andahat = Other planets in sky as well
Atoorte = Unbreakable
Baddham = Holds
Ashwam Iv Adhukshat = Like horses

MOTION OF EARTH

Rig Veda 10.22.14
“This earth is devoid of hands and legs, yet it moves ahead. All the objects over the earth also move with it. It moves around the sun.

In this mantra,
Kshaa = Earth (refer Nigantu 1.1)
Ahastaa = without hands
Apadee = without legs
Vardhat = moves ahead
Shushnam Pari = Around the sun
Pradakshinit = revolves

    Sir can I have the sanskrit verse in rig Veda for the above hymns.
    By the way great work sir
    I am preparing a thesis on gravity, your help would be great

    “अन्यूनानतिरीक्ताश्च वर्धन्यापो हसंती च उदयास्तमनेष्विन्दो: पक्षयो: शुक्लकृष्णयो:” It holds Moon responsible for water’s ‘up & down (tide)’.

    Kanad sutra

    संयोगभावे गुरुत्वात्पतनम Every objects fall due to gravity in abscense of conjunction.

    🌷The word gravitational force in sanskrit is called as “#GURUTVA_AKARSHANA_SHAKTI”. ‘Gurutva’ meaning ‘mass’ and ‘Akaarshana shakti’ means ‘attractive pull’.

    Three Vaishesika Sutras proposed by Hindu Sage #Acharya_Kanada 1800 years before #Newton’s Three Laws of Motion.

    👉 वेगः निमित्तविशेषात कर्मणो जायते |

    Translation :
    Change of motion is due to impressed force.
    (The law stated that an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.)

    👉 वेगः निमित्तापेक्षात कर्मणो जायते नियतदिक क्रियाप्रबन्धहेतु |

    Translation :
    Change of motion is proportional to the impressed force and is in the direction of the force.

    👉 वेगः संयोगविशेषविरोधी |

    Translation :
    Action and reaction are equal and opposite.

    He wrote “Siddhānta Śiromaṇī” and also contributed to “Surya Siddhanta” that was originally written by Aryabhatta.

    Here are some of the slokas from his book Surya Siddhanta that mentions how gravitation works :

    🌴Surya Sidhantha 12th chapter 32 shlok

    मध्ये समन्तादण्डस्य भूगोलो व्योम्नि तिष्ठति ।
    बिभ्राणः परमां शक्तिं ब्रह्मणो धारणात्मिकाम् ॥

    “madhye samantadasya bhugolo vyomni tisthati
    bibhranah paramam saktim brahmano dharanatmikam”

    Translation :
    The spherical earth stands at the centre of earth in space due to the dharanatmikam shakti (internal energy)
    which prevents earth from falling away and helps it to stand firm.

    🌴Sidhanta Shiromani, Bhuvanakosa, 6th shlok

    आकृष्टिशक्तिश्च महि तय यत्।
    खष्ठं गुरु स्वभिमुखं स्वशक्त्या ॥
    आकृष्यते तत्पततीव भाति।
    समेसमन्तात् क्व पतत्वियं खे ॥

    “akrsta saktisca mahi taya yat svastham guru svabhimukham svasaktya
    akrsyate tatpatativa bhati same samantat kva patatviyam khe”

    Translation :
    Every object falls on the ground due to earth’s force of attraction. This force allows the sun, earth, moon and constellations to stay in the orbit.
    _____________________________________________

    🌷The Taittiriya branch of Krishna Yajurveda says :

    मित्रोदाधार पृथ्वीमुतघां मित्रा कृष्टी रनिमिषाभि चष्टे।

    Meaning : Sun is holding the earth and other planets in space. So, above verse says sun has power of attraction (kristheeh) and shines without interruption. (Which means sun is shining even at night).
    Saying that the sun attracts earth implies that the earth is also an onject with different type of repulsive force (Gravitational force). Otherwise, if sun had attractive force and earth doesn’t have any force of its own, then they would have collided long back.

    🍁This same idea is also reflected in verse of Varahamihira (6th century AD) 👇

    “earth is like a sphere made up of the five basic elements, and is placed at the middle of a cage, this cage is made up of the galaxies and stars and hence, earth is dangling in the sky, like an iron ball in the middle of a cage of magnetic balls.”
    ____________________________________________

    🌷Acharya Bhaskaracharya on gravitation :

    👉”Without any support, Earth is hanging in the space through his own internal energy (shakti), because of which the whole solar system rotates in specified orbits, while creatures like demons, humans, animals etc rests on her surface.”

    👉“Ball of earth has energy of aakrushti shakti meaning “attraction”. Because of this attractive force, the earth pulls eveything towards her (svastham) and this power is her own and natural. Due to this attractive false, all objects dropped on earth appears to be falling down.”

    🌷Acharya Aryabhatta on gravitation :

    👉”Livings beings in different location are not scattered away into the space because of the attractive force of earth.”

    👉“Each flower is a cluster of co-centric smaller flowers, all of which put together make a ball like single flower. The smaller flowers of the Kadamba flower are tied to the center of the cluster, all the water living, the surface living and the sky living creatures are tied to the center of the earth.”

    🌷Acharya Brahmagupta on gravitation written in Brahmasphutasiddhanta :

    👉”Bodies fall towards the Earth as it is in the nature of the Earth to attract bodies, just as it is in the nature of water to flow”.

    🌷Prasnopanishad on gravitation :

    👉“Objects fall on earth due to a force of attraction by the earth. therefore, the earth, the planets, constellations, the moon and the sun are held in orbit due to this attraction”.

    👉”the vitality (of the earth and water) controls the descending development in our bodies because of the gravitational pull of the earth.”

    👉”Adityo ha vai bahyah prana udayatyesa hyenam caksusam pranamanugrhnanah prthivyam ya devata saisa purusasyapanama vastabhyantara yadakasah sa samano, vayur-vyanah”

    Meaning :
    “Aakarshana Sakthi is the power of drawing or pulling something, The breath called Prana (which we inhale) goes up (in the body) and Apana (which we exhale) pulls it down (out of the body). The force which pulls something down is Apana. Earth has Apana sakthi. The deity of the Earth inspires the human body with Apana.”
